Goblin’s Lair

Goblin’s Lair

San Rafael Swell—Goblin Valley State Park (permit required)

Also known as Chamber of the Basilisk, the Goblin's Lair is a single rappel into a large cavern on the east end of the Valley of the Goblins in Goblin Valley State Park. In October 2022, the state park visitors center charged $2 per person for a Goblin's Lair permit.

The approach to Goblin's Lair is at the east end of Valley 2. When you reach the first "Goblin's Lair" signpost, it's a few decent downclimbs from there until you reach the rappel. Just keep going down the drainage. The anchor is a rapide on several pieces of webbing around a very large boulder. The start can be awkward for those less experienced. Goblin's Lair has three skylights and a boulder scramble out of a large hole on the east end. Therefore, Goblin's Lair is not dark once you rappel in. There is no need for flashlights unless it's dusk or later. Once the rappel is over, pull and pack your rope(s), take off your harness, and hike 1.5-miles back (north and then west) around the cliffs back to the main parking lot.

What to Expect
  • This route requires standard technical gear.
  • You can usually expect dry conditions.
  • Competent and smaller groups (4±) typically complete the route in under three hours
In my opinion, this route was pretty good and is worth doing again.
